What is BaseCamp?
BaseCamp is Impact Mental Health’s own social platform for use by people who have attended one of our courses.
In addition, users will soon also be able to access all the course materials for the courses they have attended.
It is designed to be another way to keep in touch with fellow learners, swap stories, share photos and videos, chat to other members, offer or receive peer support, review course materials and more besides.
If you have any questions or suggestions or if you find any issues or problems, please visit our BaseCamp help desk.
How did it come to be?
“Having completed the Pathways to Recovery programme, I have since come to realise my sister Wendy fell into the “self-resilience” camp, as opposed to being “bloody-minded” or having a “my way, or the highway” mentality as my family had concluded! This meant that despite numerous obstacles and worries during her life, she somehow managed to cope with them and keep on top of things. I now come to realise that she always had long-term goals, no matter how tough she found work she was good and successful at her job and able to invest wisely in her ultimate wish: To retire early with plenty of finance to move to the coast, buy a house with a nice garden and view of the sea, then indulge in her passions of art, writing and travel.
Even when Wendy had a serious car accident a few years ago, despite spending almost a year in hospital to mend her bones she never got too down or dependent on others. She used her time to ensure she got all the benefits and compensation she deserved from an incident entirely not her fault. Just as she was able to move and walk again, hospital tests threw up an unexpected setback, Lung Cancer. However, even then Wendy just “got on with it”, applying her time and energies in making sure she was well-versed in getting the best medical treatment. There were always options, always hope, moments of reward when things seemed to be working out. Still, Cancer rarely writes a happy story in the end and Wendy’s was sadly no exception. She still remained pragmatic and cheerful, concentrating or transferring her retirement assets to her close family and friends. She was especially supportive of me in my recovery thanks to Impact and when I informed her of volunteering opportunities offered to me, in our last coherent conversation with each other her response was emphatic: “Do It!”
So, in the grand tradition of philanthropists who would establish public resources, such as Libraries (For example, Andrew Carnegie established the St. Albans Public Library, when he wasn’t building the Carnegie Hall in New York City: “How to you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice!”) some of Wendy’s legacy has been used to create this resource in her memory, so that others can study and refresh the tools that will help them keep the positive outlook on life that she managed to achieve.”
